Bantam AAs Break The Ice in a Thriller at St Luke’s Icebreaker

DULUTH, MN — Two Thunder Bay Queens teams are in Duluth this weekend competing in the St. Luke’s Icebreaker Invitational; The Gridlink Atom Queens in the 10U-A division and the Bantam AA Queens in the 15U-A division.

The Bantam AAs had their first game against the Hermantown Mirage. Although the Queens outshot Hermantown 9-2 after the first period they trailed 2-0. Joanna Martinsen scored on a nice individual effort and made a great deke to get her side on the board in the 2nd period–The lone goal in the period.

A number of unnecessary penalties made it difficult to create any scoring chances and took the flow right out of the game, though the Queens' penalty kill was exceptional. With the score at 2-1 Mirage with under two minutes in the game, and shorthanded, the Queens felt forced to pull their goalie to be able to play 5-on-5 and it paid off as Makara Magbanua’s pointshot found its way into the back of the net to tie the game up with under a minute left!

The game went to 3-on-3 overtime where we the Queens were forced to kill another penalty but they survived, pushing the game to a shootout.

Rhae Thomas was the lone goal scorer and Presley Brohm was excellent in relief in the shootout stopping all 3 shooters as the Queens skated to a 3-2 victory, outshooting their opponents 24-17.

The Bantam AAs next game is a must win against Woodbury to advance to semi finals Saturday night.
