EDINA, MN — The Gridlink Atom Queens will play for the Championship of the Annual Cake Eater Classic in Edina, Minnesota.
On Saturday morning, the Queens played their final inter-poll game against Mahtomedi. Despite carrying the play and outshooting their opponents 6-1, the Queens couldn’t find the back of the net in the first period. In the second, though they’d get a powerplay and Kayla Grant walked in from the point and fired a low hard shot past the goalie. In the third, the Queens found themselves on the other side of special teams killing a penalty when Morgan Barenz stole a puck in the offensive zone and shot the puck wide but it bounced right back in front onto the stick of Lily Don-Comeau who’d score shorthanded. Late in the game Danica Wilson would walk the puck down from the point to behind the net and pass the puck out to Barenz who’d snipe and put the Queens up 3-0. Goalie Norah Traer stopped everything she saw, leading her side to a 3-0 win.
With their 2-0-1 record, the Queens tied Edina for 1st in their pool. Since it was Edina they had tied 1-1, the head-to-head tie-breaker was of no use. The second tie-breaker, goal differential, was also a tie. So it had to go to a third tie-breaker, least goals against, where the stingy Queens finally won out, only allowing 2 goals in 3 games.
The Gridlink Queens will play Osseo-Maple Grove tomorrow at 12:30 in the Championship game.
