Paddington Scores Hattrick in Return

WINNIPEG, MB — The Sportop Midget AA Queens kicked off the Junior Women’s Hockey League (JWHL) Weekend with a matchup against the Pacific Steelers. Forward Alexis Paddington had finally returned from injury and made an immediate impact scoring in the first period on a setup from Gaby Andreacchi. The Steelers got that goal back in the second and then took the lead but it would last mere seconds before Paddington sniped her second of the game to tie it up. In the third period Paddington would continue scoring, getting her hattrick goal to put the Queens up 3-2. Kailey Swerhun drew the lone assist. Reese Keating wouldn’t allow another goal to Pacific and Paddington got her 4th point of the game setting up Andreacchi in the final minute. 4-2 final.

That afternoon, the Queens faced the Balmoral Hall Blazers. A pair of goals from Brenna Nicol put Thunder Bay up by two but the Blazers managed a late goal in the first. 2-1 after one. Kailey Swerhun and Sarah Grieve put up goals early in the first to give the Queens a 4-1 lead but Balmoral Hall made it a 1-goal game again potting two on the Queens. Kendra Fortin buried a goal right after though to give her side a more comfortable lead heading into the third. 5-3 after two. The Blazers would come all the way back scoring three unanswered goals, taking a 6-5 lead and hanging on to hand the Queens a loss.

Tomorrow the Sportop Queens will battle Ridley College at 12:45pm and then will relax, taking in a game between the University of Manitoba and University of Saskatchewan where former teammates Molly Kunnas and Jamie Ricklefs will be playing for U of M Bisons.
