Day One of the Confederation College Thunderhawks Invitational

THUNDER BAY, ON — Friday night kicked off night one of the Confederation College Thunderhawks Invitation Tournament for both the Sportop Midget AA and Gridlink Midget A Queens teams.

The Midget AAs started with a bang against the Manitoba Northstars as Kendra Fortin and Sarah Grieve both scored early on to jump the Queens out in front. The goals kept coming with Saige MacLeod and Brenna Nicol sniping in the second to give Thunder Bay a 4-0 lead, Sibley Duckert and Olivia Cava kept up the 2-goals per period pace in the third and Reese Keating kept her net spotless as the Queens coasted to a 6-0 victory.

In their second game of the day, taking on the host Thunderhawks, as Gaby Andreacchi opened the scoring and then scored again to make it 2-0 and Sarah Grieve also found the back of the net. 3-0 after the first. In the second, Confederation College got one back but the Queens responded with six of their own as Grieve notched a couple more, completing her hattrick, Saige MacLeod also put up a pair, and the Queens also got goals from Kendra Fortin and Brenna Nicol. 9-1 final.

The Midget AA Queens will take on the LU Thunderwolves tomorrow morning at 10:30am and then the Thunder Bay Fury at 7:45pm.

Meanwhile, the Midget As took on the Thunder Bay Fury to open up their tournament in a very tight matchup as the game went scoreless through two. The Queens finally got on the board after Captain Caitlyn McGuire setup Alessia Ricciardi who’d score to give the Queens a 1-0 lead. Goalie Camryn Williams had been perfect up to this point but Fury player Isabella Carangi would break the shutout bid, and scoring the eventual game tying goal in a 1-1 draw.

In the evening, they took on the Fort Frances Muskies. Both teams were held off the game sheet until the second when the Muskies scored twice. Fort Frances would manage another couple of goals, eventually dropping the Queens to a 4-0 score in a game that had a combined 28 penalty minutes served.

Tomorrow, the Midget A Queens will take on the St. Thomas Saints at noon before meeting the host Thunderhawks at 7:00pm.
