Sportop Midget AA Queens to play for Gold at CanAm CupMADISON, WI — On Day 2 of the CanAm Challenge Cup, the Sportop Midget AA Queens got up early for a 10:00am start against the Anaheim Lady Ducks. With goalie Josée Robinson still working her way back from injury, Kamryn Sandelovich got her third straight start of the tournament.
The girls from Anaheim, despite the time change, looked alert early as they’d score just one minute in. Alexis Paddington though would get it back with 28 seconds left in the period, scoring on a play setup by Brynne Lambert. In the second, Kendra Fortin would work the puck to Brenna Nicol who’d put the Queens up 2-1. And then in the third, Fortin to Nicol was the winning combination again as Nicol potted the insurance marker for the two goal lead. Sandelovich stopped the rest of the pucks that came her way en route to a 3-1 victory.
Almost immediately after, the Bantam AA Queens would take on the U16 version of the Anaheim Lady Ducks. Goalie Reese Keating shutout the Ducks through two but Anaheim would finally get on the board with 1:53 left in the game. For their part, the Queens got shutout in this one in a 1-0 loss.
That evening, the Bantam AAs looked for their first win of the tournament as they took on the hometown Madison Capitols. The first period would close with a 1-1 draw with Caryss Kehl scoring for the Queens. Madison would take the lead in the second to which Thunder Bay answered back in the third on a goal from Alessia Ricciardi but the Capitols would manage a third period goal as well and hang on to beat the Queens 3-2, handing them their third loss of the weekend.
Meanwhile, in the U19 division, the Midget AA Queens had a 3-0 record going into Saturday night’s action and a win against the Petoskey Northmen would guarantee a shot at gold. This game, however, wouldn’t be as exciting as the others as the Queens scored 3 first period goals from Kailey Swerhun, Mackenzie Lehto and Molly Kunnas which went unanswered, giving the Queens a 3-0 head start. In the second, Lucy Newman and Brenna Nicol would both score as Kunnas added her second of the game as the Queens once again finished a period with a three goals to nothing score. And it’d be more of the same in the third with Jocelyn Wojciechowski and Alexis Paddington scoring while, once again, Kunnas would get the third goal of the period, completing her hat trick.
With the win, the Sportop Midget AA Queens will take on Sault Ste. Marie in the gold medal game at 10:30am on Sunday!
