Gridlink Queens Win CanAm Cup in Wisconsin


MADISON, WI — The Gridlink Midget A Queens have captured the gold medal at the CanAm Challenge Cup in Madison, Wisconsin!

After going undefeated (4-0) in the round robin, outscoring their opponents 24-1, the Queens had earned their spot in the championship game against Superior, Colorado’s Lady Rough Riders.

Queens goalie Mya Gowanlock would need to hold down the fort in the first period stopping all 15 shots while Sarah Grieve capitalized on one of the Queens’ 12 shots, scoring late in the period to give the Queens a 1-0 lead.

In the second, the Lady Rough Riders tied the game early on and continued to press, outshooting the Queens 11-5 in the period. Gaby Andreacchi regained the lead for Thunder Bay, scoring at around the half-way point of the game. 2-1 after two.

The team from Colorado once again tied the game with 5:28 remaining but just 1:38 later, Queens Captain Caitlin Olinski buried the eventual “golden goal”, giving her team a 3-2 lead while Gowanlock stopped 30 of 32 shots en route to winning the CanAm Challenge Cup!

In all, the Gridlink Queens finish the tournament with a record of 5-0, amassing 27 goals for while goalies Gowanlock and Camryn Williams only surrendered 3 goals against.
