CHICAGO, IL — The Gridlink Midget A Queens began the Winter Classic Showcase with a game against the K-Stars from Kalkaska, Michigan who were the silver medalists last year in Chicago. The K-Stars have had an impressive season so far taking 2 championships the season, including going undefeated in the CCM World Invitational in which they outscored opponents 32-3 so needless to say, this would be a good test.
The Queens got an early jump outshooting the K-Stars 7-1 in the first but both sides came up empty. Midway into the second, the K-Stars would score the first goal of the game. Despite outshooting them 24-17 in the game and feeling like they, at times, out skated them, the Queens couldn’t get that one bounce for the puck to go in. The K-Stars would manage a late third period goal, taking the game 2-0.
In their evening game, the Queens faced off against Revolution U19. This matchup would be a bit uneven as the Queens quickly jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first off of goals from Olivia Nicholl, Caitlin Olinski and Sarah Grieve. The second period yielded two more goals, first from the stick of Haley Wrigley before a second goal by Olinski. Then in third Gaby Andreacchi went on a tear scoring a natural hattrick with Kayla Stein plunking in one more as the Queens routed the Revolution nine-zip.
Sunday afternoon, the Midget As will play the Utah Lady Grizzlies before learning where they place in the playoff round.
