Vinet, Hrubeniuk Power Defending Champs to Semis

THUNDER BAY, ON — The Gridlink Atom Queens had an 8:00am start on day 3 of the Keating Fall Classic against the Atom A VP Bearcats. VP would get on the board on a goal by Brayden Hodges late in the first. This must’ve woken the Queens up as Grace Dorey would setup both Olivia Vinet and Morgan Barenz who would each score goals 19 seconds apart in the last minute of the first to take the lead. After a scoreless second period, the Queens got off to a quick start in the third with Vinet scoring on a play from Ayla Wrigley just 1:12 into the period and then Vinet would complete the hattrick 22 seconds later giving the Queens a 4-1 lead. Maddy Arthur would add one more for a 5-1 final.

In the afternoon, the Atoms met up with the North End Atomcs who, before they could take a breath, were down 1-0 to the Gridlink Queens as Ava Hrubeniuk would score just 4 seconds after puck drop. Sienna Ricciardi would bury another goal, with help from Shayla Stokaluk drawing the only assist, in the first period. After a scoreless second, Ava Hrubeniuk would again get off to a quick start scoring unassisted just 31 seconds into the third. Goalie Brylee Illson would ensure no comeback was made, stopping every chance and earning the shutout. 3-0 final.

Saturday’s pair of wins gives the Atom Queens a record of 3-0-1 in the four game round robin which clinched their 1st place spot in Pool C and a birth into the semi-final on Sunday morning against the 1st place team in Pool B (which as of right now looks to be either the Neebing Thunderhawks or KC Knights) at 10:00am at FN2.
