Media Release: Sunday, October 6, 2019
Bantam AA Queens Find Equal Competition vs Wisconsin’s BestCHIPPEWA FALLS, WI — The Bantam AA Queens took on Team Wisconsin this past weekend as a part of the International Ice Hockey Federation’s (IIHF) 9th annual World Girls’ Ice Hockey Weekend (WGIHW).
Friday afternoon, the two teams sized each other up skating to a scoreless draw in the first before really taking off in the second. The Queens got on the board first after Joanna Martinsen setup Katy Lacosse for a goal but Wisconsin responded within a minute with an equalizer. Later on, Wisconsin would take the lead but the Queens responded shortly after as Martinsen played the role of goal scorer this time as Taylee Marks and Caryss Kehl drew assists. Goalie Presley Brohm stopped 17 of 19 pucks in the game but her players couldn’t give her any more run support as the Queens tied the first game 2-2.
That evening, in their second game, the Queens jumped out early scoring just under 2-minutes in on a goal by Ella Mannila. In the second, Bridget Cameron would feed a pass to Rhae Thomas who’d score early to extend the lead but Wisconsin came back with two goals, tying it at two a piece. But before the period’s end, Lacosse capitalized on the powerplay to give the Queens back the lead. Early in the third, the Queens had another chance on the man-advantage but it’d be Team Wisconsin scoring shorthanded and tying the game again. Samantha Cicigoi would help get the Queens back in front as she’d setup Joanna Martinsen for the go-ahead goal and before Wisconsin could comeback again, Makara Magbanua sniped late in the game to put it away. 5-3 final. Abby Wills had a busy game, facing 28 shots.
In the third and final game on Saturday morning, Wisconsin got on the board first scoring twice in 32 seconds in the first. Marks setup Thomas for a powerplay goal, cutting the lead to one. 2-1 after one. Paige Broughton would tie the game early in the second but Wisconsin regained the lead late in the middle frame. 3-2 after two. In the third, Martinsen and Lacosse both worked the puck up to Riah Compardo who scored and tied the game for the Queens again. Unfortunately for the Queens, a penalty would be their undoing as Wisconsin scored on their powerplay for the game winner. 4-3 Team Wisconsin. Wills and Brohm shared the net this game, facing 10 shots each.
Team Manager Abi Sprakes expressed what a great weekend it was as the Bantam AAs worked well as a team against a very good team made up of Wisconsin’s best players. And also thanked Team Wisconsin for being such great hosts, all in all making for a perfect way to celebrate the WGIHW.
