Media Release: Friday, September 8, 2017
Tough Competition but Strong Showing for Sportop QueensSTONEY CREEK – In their first contest of the 2017-18 campaign, the Thunder Bay Sportop Midget AA Queens took on the very evenly matched Whitby Wolves. The first period would almost come to a draw before Whitby forward Madi Shepard would open the scoring with 1:11 remaining in the period. After the flood, the Queens would face somewhat of an onslaught being outshot 9-2 in a second period which featured some penalty killing, including a 5-on-3, but Thunder Bay netminder, Aden Johnson shut the door maintaining the 1-goal deficit. Playing even-strength for the entirety of the third period, the Queens mounted an onslaught of their own peppering the Wolves goal with 11 shots. The Queens appeared to tie the game, scoring in the final frame but the goal was waved off. Despite their strong play and overwhelming shot totals in the period, hitting a goal post was as close as the Queens would come in an eventual 1-0 game in which pucks simply did not bounce in their favour. As a frame of reference, Whitby would tie their second game of the tournament 0-0.
The Queens faced the Waterloo Ravens Friday evening in Stoney Creek with the Ravens coming off a 2-2 tie in their afternoon game so both teams were searching for their first win of the tournament.
In the opening period, the teams would exchange a couple quick goals as Queens defenceman Brenna Bohonos would setup Victoria Darosa to draw first blood but Waterloo would tie the game back up just 14 seconds later. In the second period, the Queens retook the lead as Vanessa Nicholl would capitalize on linemate, Jamie Ricklefs’, good work to put the Queens up 2-1 going into the third. Waterloo would come back, however, opening the scoring in the third just 3:26 in and then take a 3-2 lead at the 8:54 mark. Nicholl would repay the favour, setting up Ricklefs to tie the game just 32 seconds after Waterloo took the lead. The tie would be short-lived however as Waterloo would draw a penalty on the next shift and score on the powerplay to make it 4-3 with half a period to go. Despite a strong push, the Queens would drop a second 1-goal contest on Friday.
Looking ahead to tomorrow, the Queens face-off against two undefeated teams in the Kitchener Lady Rangers (12:30PM) and London Devilettes (7:20PM).
