Queens’ sensational run in Brampton falls just short, News (Thunder Bay Women's Hockey Association)

BRAMPTON, Ont. – A sensational weekend on the ice for the Thunder Bay Sportop midget AA Queens fell just short Sunday after they dropped a narrow 3-1 decision to the host Brampton Canadettes in the championship game of the  2 Nations College Prep Series in Brampton, Ont.

After posting a half dozen close wins that resulted in six consecutive shutouts to advance to the final, Thunder Bay, who was skating in their third game of the day, saw Brampton notch the game-winner winner with 7:52 to play before the Canadettes iced it with an empty netter in the late going to secure the decision.

Briana Prete scored the lone Queens’ goal in the contest with assists going to Amanda Pages and Molly Kunnas.

Aden Johnson suffered the setback in net for Thunder Bay in a match-up in which they outshot the Canadettes 25-18 overall.

The Queens advanced to the final with a 3-0 triumph over the Ottawa Ice in quarter-final action earlier in the day before blanking the Oakville Hornets 2-0 in the semifinal.

Against Ottawa, Johnson posted her third shutout of the weekend to backstop her side to victory.

Karadyn Kiviaho and Vanessa Nicholl had a goal and assist each while Julia Siciliano supplied the other marker.

Taking on Oakville is semifinal play, it was Josée Robinson who had her third shutout in as many starts as she turned aside all 26 attempts she saw in the triumph over the Hornets.

Madeline Browczuk notched the game-winner in the latter stages of the middle stanza while Allyson Lesperance finished off the work of Browczuk and Pages in the third to round out the scoring.

A total of 44 teams took part in the event with the Queens finishing second overall and earning a silver medal for their impressive performance.
