EDINA, Minn. – The Thunder Bay bantam AA Queens have returned home from the 12th annual Tradition Cake Eater Classic tournament in Edina, Minn., with a 2-2 record.
They wrapped up round robin play Saturday evening with an 8-0 triumph over the Hastings Raiders, but missed out on the semifinals in the 15-team tourney by a narrow goal-differential of just two.
They then took on the Andover Huskies in the fifth-sixth place contest Sunday where they fell by a 6-1 count.
In the victory over Hastings, Queens’ captain Brenna Nicol opened the scoring for Thunder Bay while Mikaela Chimbakis and Kailey Swerhun added later efforts in the opening session.
They continued to press the attack in the middle stanza and were rewarded with three more tallies as Sydney White, Sibley Duckert and Nicol all found the back of the net.
Thunder Bay then wrapped up the one-sided triumph in the third with goals from Olivia Nicholl and Chimbakis.
Lindsay Humeniuk stopped all 12 shots she faced to post the shutout.
In Sunday’s contest, Andover saw Peyton Hemp score four times and an assist to pace the Huskies offensively.
Kendra Fortin picked up the lone Queens’ marker in the final frame on an assist from Kayla Stein.
Humeniuk faced 28 shots in defeat for Thunder Bay.
