Both Queens’ midget squads post shutouts Friday eveningDETROIT, Mich. – It was a night of shutouts Friday for the Thunder Bay Queens midget squads as the Sportop midget AA’s blanked the St. Louis Lady Blues 2-0 at the 2 Nations College Prep Series in Detroit, Mich., while the Topper’s Pizza midget A side branded the Beaver Brae Broncos of Kenora 9-0 in their opening contest of the Scott Clendenning Memorial Showcase in Fort Frances.
In Detroit, after a scoreless opening frame, Thunder Bay’s Mary Flaherty connected on the power play with 5:42 left in the middle session providing what would be the game-winning goal.
Molly Kunnas then added some insurance late in the contest to round out the scoring.
Tia Lampo chipped in with two assists for the Queens.
Aden Johnson handled all 21 shots she faced to put the shutout for Thunder Bay, who fired 28 attempts on the St. Louis net.
The Sportop Queens have two games on the docket against Detroit-area teams Saturday starting with an 8 a.m. match-up vs. Belle Tire before wrapping up round robin competition vs. Little Caesars at 4:30 p.m.
Meanwhile in Fort Frances Breanna Veneruz tallied twice and set-up another while Caitlyn Olinski and Brooke Herman notched two markers each to pace the midget A attack.
Supplying singles were MacKenzie Lehto, Victoria Darosa and Jocelyn Wojciechowski.
Cameron Ivall posted the shutout for the squad.
A pair of tilts awaits the midget A’s Saturday beginning with a 1:15 p.m. encounter vs. the host Fort Frances Muskies before finishing up against the Thunder Bay midget Fury at 9 p.m.
