STONEY CREEK, Ont. – A Tanner Gates power play goal with 28 seconds remaining in overtime was the difference maker as the California Wave edged the Thunder Bay Sportop midget AA Queens 2-1 Saturday afternoon at the 12th annual Stoney Creek Sabres Showcase.

The game was scoreless through the game’s first two periods before Brooke Bryant put the Wave on top while up a skater four and a half minutes into the third.

Thunder Bay rallied for to force extra time with 6:10 remaining in regulation as Allyson Lesperance set-up Hannah Armstrong for the equalizer.

Late in OT California picked up another power play and struck for the game-winner to pull out the victory.

The Wave outshot the Queens 25-18 in the contest.

Thunder Bay returns to action at 5:55 p.m. as they take on the Toronto Aeros.
