Queens to send 3 teams to OWHA provincials

THUNDER BAY – The Thunder Bay Queens are set to send three of their member clubs to Toronto this weekend to compete in the Ontario Women’s Hockey Association provincial championships.

Each of the Sportop midget AA, Goldcorp midget A and the RBC Dominion Securities bantam AA will be in suburban Toronto competing for provincial gold.

Game action for the Sportop Queens begins Thursday evening at 9:15 p.m. as they take on the Peterborough Ice Kats.

Next up will be a pair of contests Friday starting with a 10:30 a.m. encounter vs. the St. Catharines Brock Jr. Badgers at 10:30 a.m. before wrapping up round robin play against the Toronto Aeros at 7 p.m.

A total of 24 midget AA teams will be vying for the title with the Ontario champion moving on to the Esso Cup Canadian championship April 17-23 in Weyburn, Sask.

In midget A play, there will also be two dozen squads looking to mine provincial gold.

The Goldcorp Queens first game will be Friday morning at 10:30 a.m. vs. the Toronto Leaside Wildcats.

From there Peterborough’s Ice Kats midget A side will provide the opposition in a 5:15 p.m. match-up Friday.

Round out round robin competition will be the Markam-Stouffville Stars Saturday at 8 a.m.

As for the RBC Dominion Securities bantam AA’s, they also open play Friday with the face-off with the Whitby Wolves at 1 p.m.

They will then tangle with the Burlington Barracudas in an 8 p.m. start to conclude the day.

The bantam AA Queens then finish up with the Nepean Wildcats at noon on Saturday.

Further games for each of the three Thunder Bay teams will be based on their round robin results.

Meanwhile prior to departing for the OWHA provincials, the Goldcorp midget A Queens made a donation of $600 to the Thunder Bay Boys & Girls Club from the funds that were raised by the team earlier this season during their Christmas Feast dinner.
