MADISON, Wis. – It was a tough day for the Thunder Bay Queens at the CAN/AM Cup tournament in Madison, Wis., Sunday as each of the three competing teams fell in their respective medal games.
The Triad Contracting peewees earned a silver medal after dropping a 4-1 decision to a strong Edina Green side from Minnesota in the championship game in that division.
Edina jumped out to a 4-0 lead well into the third period before Mackenzie Lehto notched the lone goal for Thunder Bay. Carly Hennessey picked up the lone assist on the play.
Shots on goal favoured Edina by a 30-16 margin with Josee Robinson putting in a strong effort despite the defeat.
As for the bronze medal contest in the bantam AA group the First Class Gas Queens were blanked 2-0 by Team Illinois in the third place contest.
Illinois fired 28 attempts on Thunder Bay starter Mackenna Burke while Tianna Lavelle stopped all 23 shots she faced to post the shutout.
Meanwhile the Norcan Tours and Travel midget A side suffered a hard fought 2-1 defeat vs. the Madison Capitals in their third place match-up.
After a scoreless opening period Danielle Veneruzzo fed Jordyn Paris to give the Queens the lead heading into the final frame.
Madison battled back to tie it six minutes into the third with the Capitols completing the comeback late in regulation to win the bronze thanks to a Emily Ospal effort.
Bailey Chenier made 24 stops in defeat for Thunder Bay who put 21 shots on Hanna Buchman in the Madison net.
