Sportop Queens to play for provincial gold


OTTAWA – For the fourth year in succession the Thunder Bay Sportop midget AA Queens will play for Ontario Women’s Hockey Association provincial championship.

Thunder Bay earned a berth in their latest final after they edged the Saugeen-Maitland Lightning 2-1 Sunday morning in semifinal play at the OWHA provincials in Ottawa.

The Queens will meet the North Bay Ice Boltz in the title contest, which goes at 2 p.m. at Ray Friel Arena.

North Bay defeated the Nepean Wildcats 1-0 in their semifinal.

Michelle Carlson notched the first goal while Montana Russo fired the game-winner.

Jayde Turcotte picked up the win in net.

The OWHA champion will then advance to the Esso Cup Canadian national midget championship April 21-27 in Burnaby, B.C.
