BOB THOMPSON MEMORIAL AWARD

Bob Thompson played a vital role in shaping the Thunder Bay Queens into the organization we know today.

BOB THOMPSON MEMORIAL AWARD
Est. 2006

Each year, the Thunder Bay Queens Organization awards one deserving athlete, from each of the teams, an award based on dedication, character, resilience, contributions as a teammate and leadership. The Bob Thompson Memorial Award has become one of the most coveted awards given out at the yearly Queen’s banquet.

Bob’s daughter Mackenzie was an avid hockey player, and as with many of our young athletes, Mackenzie started out playing boys hockey.  When 10 year old Mackenzie was about to enter the unknown world of girls hockey, the options seemed sparse.  At the time, girls’ hockey was house league and a few “all-star” teams that travelled sporadically to find different competition. Bob and some like-minded parents had a bigger vision for the girls.  Bob immediately became one of the main financial supporters of the Queens Program, a corporate sponsor and visionary for his daughter, and all female athletes to one day play elite women's hockey in Thunder Bay.

Bob was often heard saying that if he was going to invest in women’s hockey “he wanted to make it great for the girls!”

With multiple provincial and national championship teams, Bob’s vision has certainly come to fruition. More importantly, the friendships and life lessons gained by participation in our national sport provide the basis for all of those who have followed Bob, continuing to make the organization strong.
