Successful day for Queens Friday at OWHA provincialsTORONTO – Friday was a successful day for the Thunder Bay Queens at the Ontario Women’s Hockey Association provincial championships currently underway in Toronto.
The Queens went a combined 7-2-1 in day 2 competition and are now 8-2-1 overall.
The following is a rundown on each of those 10 contests:
Peewee: Triad Queens 3 Owen Sound Ice Hawks 1 – A pair of third period Molly Kunnas tallies, including the game-winner propelled Thunder Bay past Owen in the OWHA opener for both sides.
Mackenzie Lehto gave the Queens the lead with the only marker of the opening period as she finished off the work of Carly Hennessey and Hannah Leung.
After the Ice Hawks tied it in the second Kunnas buried the winner with 10:26 to go in the game before adding one in the final minute to round out the scoring.
Bantam A: Manshield Construction Queens 3 Stratford Aces 0 – Samantha Stubbs posted the shutout and Delaney McLeod had a goal and assist as the bantam A Queens blanked Stratford.
McLeod and Victoria Zieroth notched first period markers for the victorious side while Hanna Johnston added one in the third to wrap things up.
Bantam AA: FCG Queens 2 Mississauga Chiefs 2 – The First Class Gas bantam AA squad battled to a hard-fought 2-2 draw with a tough Mississauga side in the first game of the provincials for both clubs.
Midget A: Norcan Queens 2 Nepean Wildcats 0 – Allison Pages’ goal late in the first period proved to be the twinner as the Norcan midget A’s shutout Nepean.
Phoebe Leishman and Jordyn Paris combined to set-up Pages for that marker with 1:15 left in the opening session.
Whitney Scott added some insurance with an unassisted effort in the third to round out the scoring.
Bailey Chenier registered the shutout for Thunder Bay.
Midget AA: Sportop Queens 4 Barrie Sharks 0 – The Sportop midget AA’s improved to 2-0 as they sank the Sharks from Barrie.
Montana Russo scored the eventual game-winner 94 seconds into the contest while Emily Oleksuk added another a minute later to put the Queens up two after one period of play.
They tacked on two more tallies in the middle frame off the sticks of Karli Nummikoski and Samantha Strassburger to round out the scoring.
Brownwyn Bolduc dished out a pair of assists to aid Thunder Bay’s cause.
Sydney Isbell recorded the shutout in the triumph as she stopped all 12 shots she faced for her side that fired 42 pucks on the Barrie net.
Peewee: Triad Queens 3 Sarnia Lady Sting 2 – Victoria Darosa notched the eventual deciding tally with 51 seconds remaining in the second period as the peewee Queens improved to 2-0 at the provincials.
Meghan MacIssac opened the scoring for Thunder Bay in the first only to see Sarnia level the proceedings before the stanza was complete.
The Queens supplied a couple of goals in the second to go up 3-1 courtesy of Jocelyn Wojciechowski and Darosa.
The Lady Sting pulled to within one with 10 and a half minutes to go, but Josee Robinson shut the door the rest of the way for Thunder Bay to secure the victory.
Bantam A: Oakville Hornets 3 Manshield Construction Queens 0 – The bantam A’s fell to 1-1 at the OWHA’s as they were held off the score sheet by Oakville.
The Hornets got a pair of markers in the second and one late in the third with Taylor Gombola suffering the setback in the Thunder Bay net.
Bantam AA: Kanata – Ottawa Senators 3 FCG Queens 2 – The bantam AA Queens dropped their final game of the day as they were edged by Kanata – Ottawa.
With the result Thunder Bay slipped to 0-1-1 in the bantam AA division.
Midget A: Norcan Queens 3 Kingston Ice Wolves 1 – Whitney Scott tallied twice, including the game-winner with 5:56 remaining as the midget A Queens improved to 2-0 at the provincials.
The game was scoreless until just over nine minutes remaining as Sarah Doyle gave Thunder Bay the lead.
Scott then struck twice in 91 seconds to put her side in control.
Kingston would dash Brooke Basaraba’s shutout bid with 2:25 to go, but that’s as close as the Ice Wolves would get as the Queens skated to victory.
Midget AA: Sportop Queens 2 Brantford Ice Cats 0 – Montana Russo’s second game-winning goal of the day helped the midget AA Queens improve to 3-0 and win their division in round robin play.
Bronwyn Bolduc notched the other marker in the triumph.
Jayde Turcotte posted the shutout for Thunder Bay who outshot Brantford 26-10 overall.
The Queens will now advance directly to the quarter-final round where they will play either the Mississauga Chiefs or the Oakville Hornets at 8:45 p.m. Saturday evening.
Saturday also sees round robin play conclude in the other divisions as the peewees take on North Simcoe at 9:15 a.m., the bantam AA’s square off with Guelph at 9:30 a.m., the bantam A Queens play Mississauga at 11:45 a.m. while the Norcan midget A’s take on Durham West at noon.
Qualification and quarter-final contests go Saturday evening while medal round action in all divisions go Sunday.
The Sportop midget AA Queens are not only aiming for a provincial crown they are also vying for the berth at the ESSO Cup Canadian female midget championship April 20-26 in Stoney Creek, Ont.
